A Gett is a halachic divorce document required to formally dissolve a Jewish marriage in accordance with Torah law. Without a proper Gett, a couple remains married under Jewish law, even if they are divorced civilly.

Initial Application
Either spouse may contact the Beis Din to begin the Gett process. The Menahel will review the information provided and communicate with both parties. When appropriate, the Beis Din will make every reasonable effort to help the couple explore the possibility of reconciliation before proceeding with the divorce.
Scheduling the Gett
Once both parties agree to proceed, the Beis Din schedules a date for the writing and delivery of the Gett. Prior to the appointment, each party receives a list of the required documents, identification, and any additional information needed to ensure the process proceeds smoothly. The Beis Din also explains what to expect and answers any questions regarding the procedure.
Writing and Signing the Gett
On the scheduled date, the husband appears before the Beis Din to authorize a qualified sofer (scribe) and two witnesses to write and sign the Gett. If circumstances require, such as when the wife resides in another city, is unable to appear at the same location, or either party does not wish to appear together, the husband may appoint a proxy in advance to deliver the Gett on his behalf.
Delivery and Acceptance of the Gett
Once the Gett has been properly prepared, the Beis Din arranges for the wife to receive it. The Gett is delivered by the husband, or by his appointed proxy, in the presence of the Beis Din and the required witnesses. The wife formally accepts the Gett, completing the halachic divorce.
Finalization
Following the completion of the Gett, the Beis Din reviews the relevant halachic guidelines with the parties, including the requirement for the wife to wait ninety days before remarrying and the prohibition against marrying a Kohen. The original Gett is securely archived by the Beis Din. Upon receipt of the final civil divorce decree, where applicable, and payment of all outstanding fees, the Beis Din issues an official Certificate of Jewish Divorce confirming that the parties are halachically divorced.
