A Din Torah is a formal halachic process for resolving disputes through rabbinic arbitration. It’s for individuals, businesses, or institutions seeking a Torah-based alternative to secular court. Recognized by civil courts as binding arbitration, a Din Torah is the ideal halachic way for Jews to resolve disputes with one another.
Cases typically involve financial or civil matters such as: commercial disputes, contracts, employment issues, business disagreements, inheritance, or communal conflicts.
A Din Torah is usually heard by a panel of three qualified dayanim who carefully consider all evidence and arguments in accordance with halacha. In some cases, a single dayan may preside.
The Din Torah Process
Review & Summons
The Beth Din office will review your request and issue a summons to the defendant.
Din Torah
A date for a Din Torah hearing is scheduled and on the appointed day the Din Torah takes place. The claimant and respondent have the option to self-represent or to have a legal or other representative.
Ruling
Once the dayanim reach a decision, the Beth Din issues a ruling (psak) that is binding on both parties according to both Jewish and secular law.
